Bollywood star Kareena Kapoor Khan has spoken out against the horrific rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata, echoing the nation’s growing frustration over the continued violence against women. Taking to Instagram, Kareena shared her anguish, writing, “12 years later; the same story; the same protest. But we are still waiting for change.”
Kareena’s post resonated with many, as she highlighted the alarming similarities between this recent case and past atrocities, such as the Nirbhaya tragedy that shook the nation over a decade ago. She emphasized the ongoing struggle for justice and the need for substantial change to ensure women’s safety. Her post included hashtags such as ‘Kolkata Rape And Murder Case’, ‘Violence Against Women’, ‘Justice For Women’, ‘Women Safety’, and ‘Freedom For Women’, along with a broken heart emoji, capturing the deep sorrow and anger felt by many.
On the same day, actress Alia Bhatt also expressed her outrage over the incident, stating, “Another brutal rape. Another day of realization that women are not safe, anywhere. Another horrific atrocity to remind us that it’s been over a decade since the Nirbhaya tragedy, but still nothing much has changed.”
The trainee doctor, a post-graduate student at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, was found dead in the seminar hall of the institution on August 9. The family has alleged that she was raped and murdered, sparking widespread protests across the country.
Doctors and medical students in cities such as Kolkata, Guwahati, Hyderabad, and Mumbai took to the streets on Wednesday, demanding justice for the victim. They held placards with messages like “Justice needs to be served,” “No duty without security,” and “Justice delayed is justice denied,” underscoring the urgent need for systemic change to protect women, particularly those in vulnerable positions.
The protests continue to gain momentum as the nation grapples with the grim reality that, despite years of activism and advocacy, women’s safety remains a pressing and unresolved issue in India.
