Devajit Saikia Appointed As New BCCI Secretary, Replaces Jay Shah

January 12, 2025: Devajit Saikia has been announced as the new secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), replacing Jay Shah, who assumed the role of ICC Chairman last year. Saikia, a former first-class cricketer who represented Assam in the 1990-91 season, brings a wealth of experience in cricket administration, having previously served as the BCCI joint secretary and the secretary of the Assam Cricket Association (ACA). He had been serving as the acting interim secretary of the BCCI following Jay Shah’s transition to the ICC role. The announcement came during the BCCI’s Special General Meeting (SGM) on Sunday, and the appointment was confirmed by BCCI Vice President Rajeev Shukla.

In addition, Prabhtej Singh Bhatia was elected as the new Treasurer of the BCCI, completing the leadership reshuffle within the cricket body. The meeting also marked the election of new officials following the tenure of Ashish Shelar, the former BCCI treasurer, who was recently elected as a Member of the Legislative Assembly in Maharashtra.

Jay Shah's transition to ICC Chairman marked a significant change for Indian cricket, and during his tenure, India successfully hosted the 2023 Cricket World Cup and oversaw the development of the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Shah's leadership also led to key decisions, including the resolution of the Champions Trophy 2025 hosting rights issue and the implementation of a hybrid model for all ICC events in the 2024-27 cycle.
