Rohit Sharma Sets This Timeline for Quitting Captaincy, BCCI Looks for Successor

"India's Test and ODI skipper expresses intention to continue for a few months, leaving the door open for new leadership."

January 13, 2025: India's Test and ODI captain, Rohit Sharma, recently engaged in a detailed conversation with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and chief selector Ajit Agarkar during a review meeting on Saturday. Head coach Gautam Gambhir was also present as the BCCI reviewed the team's performance following a string of disappointing results, including the 1-3 loss in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia and the 0-3 sweep by New Zealand at home.

In this pivotal meeting, Rohit reportedly shared his plans to continue as the captain for a few more months but emphasized the need for the board to start searching for his successor. As reported by Dainik Jagran, discussions about potential candidates for the captaincy role included the name of Jasprit Bumrah. However, concerns regarding Bumrah's fitness and his ability to handle the demands of a five-match Test series were raised.

Rohit's Captaincy Future

The review also touched upon Rohit’s form with the bat, which has been under scrutiny, especially during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The skipper benched himself for the final Test in Sydney, which India subsequently lost. Despite these challenges, Rohit expressed his commitment to lead the team during the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy, scheduled before the players disperse for the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Following the IPL, India will face England in a five-match Test series. It remains uncertain whether Rohit will continue as the Test captain for this series, as the BCCI is expected to evaluate options for long-term leadership during this period.

Potential Successor Debate

Jasprit Bumrah, who previously led the team in two Tests during India's tour of Australia, was considered a potential successor. However, his history of injuries, including a back injury sustained during the Sydney Test, has raised doubts about his viability as a long-term skipper.

With India looking to rebuild after recent setbacks, the BCCI faces the crucial task of selecting a captain who can balance leadership responsibilities with consistent on-field performance.
