Solar energy capacity surges as UAE spearheads regional advancements through innovation and investment
Abu Dhabi [UAE], January 17: The UAE has solidified its leadership in the regional solar energy sector, bolstered by ambitious initiatives such as the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050, which targets 75% clean energy by mid-century, and the Abu Dhabi Vision 2030, aiming for 30% renewable energy within five years.
The “Solar Outlook Report 2025,” launched by the Middle East Solar Industry Association (MESIA) at the World Future Energy Summit 2025 in Abu Dhabi, showcases the rapid expansion of solar energy in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region and highlights the UAE’s pivotal role.
MENA Solar Energy Boom
Solar energy’s contribution to the regional energy mix has grown exponentially. In 2023 alone, MENA’s solar capacity rose 23% to 32 gigawatts (GW) peak, with projections exceeding 180 GW peak by 2030. This growth is fueled by technological innovation, government backing, and private sector investment.
Key advancements include digital twins and automated cleaning systems, enhancing the performance of solar plants, increasing energy output, and reducing costs. Energy storage innovations and automated systems are addressing scalability challenges, ensuring smoother grid integration.
Focus on Green Hydrogen
The report highlights green hydrogen as a burgeoning sector, leveraging MENA’s abundant solar and wind resources to establish a competitive edge in clean energy production. While challenges such as funding and infrastructure remain, the region’s commitment to sustainability is opening new avenues for growth.
Solar Manufacturing and Market Expansion
Efforts to localize solar manufacturing are reducing reliance on external suppliers, strengthening energy resilience. Countries like Morocco, Egypt, and Tunisia are expanding their solar portfolios, contributing to local energy demands and global clean energy targets.

Fazle Moyeen Quazi, President of MESIA, emphasized the importance of next-generation technologies in improving solar project efficiency and addressing intermittency and grid stability issues.
Leen AlSebai, Head of the World Future Energy Summit, highlighted the summit’s success in fostering collaboration among global stakeholders, reinforcing MENA’s position as a leader in solar energy adoption.
