March 8, 2025: As India prepares to face New Zealand in the Champions Trophy 2025 final, rumours about Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s potential retirement from ODIs have been swirling. While both stalwarts remain in top form, discussions in cricketing circles suggest that one or both could retire if India lifts the trophy.

However, India’s vice-captain Shubman Gill has dismissed these speculations, stating that no such conversations are taking place in the dressing room.

"There is no talk about retirement in the dressing room, now," Gill said during the pre-match press conference ahead of Sunday’s high-stakes final against New Zealand in Dubai.

Gill Praises India’s Strong Batting Line-Up

Gill expressed his admiration for India’s current batting lineup, calling it the best he has ever been a part of. He highlighted the depth in the batting order, which gives top-order batters the freedom to play aggressive cricket.

"This is the best batting line-up I am part of. Rohit is one of the best openers in the world, and Virat, we need not even talk about his greatness. Our team's depth allows the top order to bat with more freedom," Gill stated.

Pressure of the Final? Gill Confident of India’s Chances

Reflecting on the 2023 ODI World Cup final loss to Australia, Gill admitted there is pressure to win this time but remains confident in India’s ability to handle big-match situations.

"We are all excited for the final. Last time we could not win the 50-over World Cup, but we are determined to lift the trophy this time," Gill said.

He emphasised that handling pressure will be the key in the high-intensity clash, suggesting that India’s familiarity with the Dubai conditions will work in their favour.

"There will be big match pressure, but the team that handles it better will win the final. We have played four matches here and done well, so there is no added pressure on us."

With India just one step away from another ICC title, the focus remains on delivering a clinical performance rather than dwelling on potential retirements. The final showdown against New Zealand promises to be an electrifying contest, with India aiming to end their 11-year wait for an ICC Champions Trophy victory.
