The International Cricket Council (ICC) has appointed India’s cricketing icon Yuvraj Singh as the ambassador for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, set to be held in the West Indies and the USA from June 1 to 29.
Yuvraj Singh, a pivotal figure in India’s cricketing history, will play a significant role in promoting the upcoming T20 World Cup. Renowned for his memorable exploits on the field, including the iconic feat of hitting six sixes in an over during the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007, Yuvraj’s association with the tournament adds immense value and excitement.
Expressing his enthusiasm for the role, Yuvraj remarked, “Some of my fondest cricketing memories have come from playing at the T20 World Cup, including hitting six sixes in an over, so it’s very exciting to be part of this edition, which is set to be the biggest one yet.”
Yuvraj’s appointment as ambassador, commemorated 36 days before the commencement of the tournament, highlights his remarkable contribution to Indian cricket, particularly his iconic moment in the 2007 T20 World Cup.
Joining illustrious figures like West Indies’ Chris Gayle and sprinting legend Usain Bolt, Yuvraj adds further prestige to the ambassadorial lineup. Reflecting on the significance of his role, he stated, “The West Indies is a great place to play cricket with the fans coming to watch creating a vibe that is completely unique to that part of the world, while cricket is also expanding in the USA and I’m excited to be part of that growth through the T20 World Cup.”
The upcoming T20 World Cup promises to be a spectacle of cricketing excellence, with 20 teams competing across nine venues in a total of 55 matches. The tournament will kick off with a clash between hosts USA and Canada at Grand Prairie Stadium in Texas, culminating in the final showdown on June 29 in Barbados.
Claire Furlong, ICC General Manager of Marketing and Communications, expressed her delight at having Yuvraj Singh on board, emphasizing his pivotal role in shaping the T20 World Cup narrative. With the involvement of icons like Yuvraj, Gayle, and Bolt, the tournament is poised to captivate cricket enthusiasts worldwide and elevate the excitement to unprecedented heights.
