“Dhoni is playing father’s role in my cricket life”: Pathirana

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Sri Lankan fast bowler Matheesha Pathirana shared his admiration for the legendary MS Dhoni, likening his role in his cricketing journey to that of a father figure. Pathirana expressed his desire for Dhoni to extend his playing career by another season in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

CSK, the five-time champions, are gearing up to face Punjab Kings in Dharamshala on Sunday in what is a crucial match for their playoff aspirations. Currently placed fifth in the points table with five wins and five losses, CSK will be aiming to secure a victory. Punjab Kings, on the other hand, stand at the seventh position with four wins, six losses, and eight points. In their recent encounter in Chennai, Punjab Kings emerged victorious by seven wickets.

Speaking on CSK’s Lions Upclose show, Pathirana expressed gratitude towards Dhoni for his constant guidance and support, drawing parallels between Dhoni’s role and that of a father. Despite minimal off-field interactions, Pathirana emphasized how Dhoni’s advice and care have been pivotal for him as a cricketer.

Pathirana revealed that Dhoni often advises him to enjoy his game and prioritize his physical well-being. He also made a heartfelt plea to Dhoni, urging him to continue playing for another season alongside him at CSK.

Pathirana, known for his distinctive bowling action reminiscent of Sri Lankan pace legend Lasith Malinga, made his debut for CSK after IPL 2022. His impressive performance in IPL 2023, where he claimed 19 wickets in 12 matches, played a significant role in CSK’s title triumph. Despite being sidelined due to injury for a few games in the ongoing season, Pathirana has maintained an impressive record, taking 13 wickets in six matches.

CSK faced a setback in their campaign as Pathirana had to return to Sri Lanka to resolve visa issues ahead of the ICC T20 World Cup, scheduled to commence in the West Indies/USA from June 1 onwards.
