Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have achieved a historic milestone by securing the top position on the points table for the first time in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL). This marks a significant achievement for the Kolkata-based franchise in the 2024 season.
As the tournament progresses towards its knockout rounds, KKR’s consistent performance has ensured their spot at the summit. Two teams have already qualified for the IPL 2024 playoffs: KKR leading the standings, while Rajasthan Royals (RR) are struggling with a four-match losing streak.
The defining moment came after Rajasthan Royals (RR) suffered a defeat against Punjab Kings (PBKS) on Wednesday. This loss allowed KKR to cement their place at the top of the league phase, a first in their IPL journey. The battle for the second spot, however, remains intense, with Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) still in contention.
RR, who had dominated much of the season, saw their chances of a top-two finish diminish with their recent string of losses. Meanwhile, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) are relying on SRH to drop points. If SRH earns at least one point, either by a washout or a win, RCB’s hopes hinge on outperforming CSK significantly.
For CSK, a victory over RCB on Saturday will secure their qualification. If they lose but maintain a net run rate (NRR) higher than RCB’s, they will still advance, provided SRH does not win both their remaining games. A wider margin of defeat for CSK would complicate their path, making them reliant on other results.
SRH needs just one more point to qualify. A win or a rain-affected match securing them a point will see them through to the playoffs. If they lose both remaining games, and RCB wins against CSK by a sufficient margin to affect CSK’s NRR, SRH could still make the cut.
The intricate dynamics of the points table ensure a thrilling conclusion to the league phase of IPL 2024, with multiple teams still vying for a spot in the playoffs.
