In a conversation, Smith revealed that the two cricketing giants, despite their fierce on-field rivalry, maintain a good relationship off the field, exchanging text messages from time to time.

Smith spoke highly of Kohli, calling him a “great guy” and a “wonderful player,” adding that it’s always exciting to compete against him. Interestingly, Smith pointed out that Kohli, in many ways, embodies the spirit of Australian cricket, particularly in his aggressive and competitive mindset. “The way he gets into it all the way, gets into the challenge, and tries to get on top of the opposition,” Smith remarked. “He is probably the most Australian of the Indian players.”

When asked about any personal rivalry with Kohli, Smith made it clear that his focus is on Australia’s success rather than individual competition. He said it’s more about “going out, playing, and trying to score as many runs as I can to help Australia succeed.”

Both Smith and Kohli are considered among the modern era’s ‘Fab Four’ batters, alongside England’s Joe Root and New Zealand’s Kane Williamson. Smith boasts an outstanding Test record with 9,685 runs at an average of 56.97 in 109 Tests, while Kohli has 8,848 runs at an average of 49.15 in 113 Tests.

Their camaraderie has extended beyond the pitch as well. A notable moment came during the 2019 World Cup when Kohli, in a gesture of sportsmanship, asked the crowd to stop booing Smith following the infamous “Sandpaper Gate” incident. Smith appreciated this act and thanked Kohli for stepping in.

As the series draws near, both teams will be gearing up for what promises to be an intense contest. The series will kick off with the first Test in Perth on November 22, followed by the second Test in Adelaide from December 6 to 10, the third Test in Brisbane from December 14 to 18, and the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne from December 26 to 30. The final Test will take place at the iconic Sydney Cricket Ground from January 3 to 7, 2024.

This series holds great significance, as both Smith and Kohli have a rich history in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Smith has been a standout performer in the series, scoring 1,887 runs at an average of 65.06, while Kohli has tallied 2,042 runs at an average of 47.48. The rivalry between these cricketing giants adds an extra layer of excitement to an already thrilling series.
