Markram Praises Stubbs-Coetzee as Duo Clinch Series-Leveling Win Over India

Gqeberha [South Africa], November 10, 2024: South African skipper Aiden Markram praised his team’s resilience and commitment to their game plan after a thrilling three-wicket win over India in the second T20I. A fierce counterattack from young stars Tristan Stubbs and Gerald Coetzee helped South Africa recover from a top-order collapse, leveling the four-match series 1-1 with an over to spare.

In the post-match presentation, Markram acknowledged the challenges faced during the game but emphasized the importance of sticking to their aggressive playing style. “I thought we bowled really well, with great plans and solid execution,” Markram stated. “From a batting point of view, we wanted to push forward at the midway stage, but it didn’t go as planned. Sometimes it doesn’t work out, and we have to take it on the chin. We’re sticking to our brand of cricket, and I’m proud of the young guys who really inspired the team.”

South Africa’s innings began with promise but soon faltered as Indian spinner Varun Chakravarthy dismantled the middle order with a stunning five-wicket haul, reducing the Proteas to 87/6. However, Stubbs (47* off 41 balls) and Coetzee (19* off 9 balls) mounted a successful counter-offensive, guiding South Africa to victory in a low-scoring, high-tension chase of 125.

Match Summary:
Earlier, South Africa won the toss and chose to bowl first. Indian batters struggled to form partnerships, with Hardik Pandya (39* off 45 balls) and Axar Patel (27 off 21 balls) providing some stability. India closed their innings at 124/6, with South African bowlers Marco Jansen and Coetzee keeping the Indian lineup in check with tight four-over spells of 1/25 each.

During South Africa’s chase, Varun Chakravarthy’s impressive 5/17 had India on the verge of victory. But Stubbs and Coetzee’s late-game heroics disrupted India’s plans, steering the Proteas to a series-leveling win. Ravi Bishnoi and Arshdeep Singh also contributed with a wicket each for India.

For his match-winning knock, Tristan Stubbs was named ‘Player of the Match’. With the series now tied at 1-1, both teams will prepare for a crucial third match in the series, promising more exciting action ahead.
