Ali, known for his hit films like Jab We Met and Love Aaj Kal, shared his candid insights, saying, “I have been a director in the Hindi film industry for 15-20 years. I’ve heard a lot about the casting couch. A girl comes in, she’s scared, and she feels the need to compromise. Let me tell you, if a woman or girl cannot say ‘no,’ her chances of succeeding don’t necessarily increase.”

Self-Respect is Key

Ali highlighted that the casting process goes beyond mere appearances or compromises, stressing that respect plays a crucial role. He added, “If a girl can say ‘no’ and respects herself, only then will others respect her too. People like me and many others often think about whether we take someone seriously or not; we need to respect a person to cast her.”

The director strongly debunked the belief that compromising guarantees a role, cautioning that such actions can often derail careers. “This belief that compromising will improve your chances in the film industry is a myth. In my experience, it’s often the opposite. People who compromise often end up compromising their careers as well.”

Imtiaz Ali, who debuted as a director with the 2005 film Socha Na Tha, has since become one of Bollywood’s most celebrated filmmakers. His iconic works include Jab We Met, Highway, Love Aaj Kal, and Laila Majnu.
