November 29, 2024: Tamil superstar Dhanush and filmmaker Aishwaryaa Rajinikanth, who recently finalised their divorce after 18 years of marriage, were once considered one of South India’s most iconic couples. However, an old statement from Dhanush has resurfaced, revealing surprising details about their union. Contrary to popular belief, Dhanush shared that his marriage to Aishwaryaa was not a love marriage, and the two never dated before tying the knot.
How It All Began
On November 1, 2004, Dhanush announced his marriage to Aishwaryaa Rajinikanth during a press conference. At the time, he addressed rumours suggesting theirs was a love marriage. According to Rediff, Dhanush explained, “I only knew Aishwaryaa as my elder sister’s friend. The media started linking us, and that prompted both families to sit down and discuss the idea of marriage. Eventually, they thought, ‘Why not?’”
He even thanked the media for unintentionally playing a role in bringing them together, saying, “So, I have to thank the media for my marriage with Aishwaryaa. I reiterate that ours is not a love marriage.”
Dhanush also spoke about their two-year age gap, saying, “The age factor does not affect me at all.”
Separation After 18 Years
On January 17, 2022, Dhanush and Aishwaryaa announced their separation, releasing a heartfelt joint statement. It read, “18 years of togetherness as friends, couple, parents, and well-wishers to each other. The journey has been one of growth, understanding, adjustment, and adaptation. Today, we stand at a place where our paths separate.”
The Chennai Family Welfare Court later finalised their divorce after both parties agreed reconciliation was no longer possible. Despite their split, Dhanush and Aishwaryaa continue to co-parent their two sons, Lingaa and Yatra, who frequently spend time with both parents.
Rajinikanth Remains Silent
While fans were shocked by the divorce, Aishwaryaa’s father, South superstar Rajinikanth, chose not to make any public statement about the separation.
