Angelina Jolie Embraces Age, Draws Praise for “Maria” Portrayal of Opera Icon

Washington [US], December 2: Hollywood star Angelina Jolie is unfazed by aging’s impact on her career, as her latest biographical film, Maria, continues to receive acclaim. The psychological drama, based on the life of legendary opera singer Maria Callas, has generated significant positive response, with critics buzzing about Jolie’s performance, reported Deadline.

“I’ve got better work as I’ve got older,” Jolie shared, emphasizing that her evolving life experiences bring depth to her roles. She added, “I don’t think about it in terms of roles offered, but in terms of the life experience you contribute.”

Jolie acknowledged that aging is “easier for actors than singers or dancers because your body doesn’t change as drastically,” and expressed admiration for Callas’ dedication to her craft despite fears of growing older.

Directed by Pablo Larraín, Maria chronicles the final days of the opera legend, who passed away at 53 in Paris in 1977. Premiering at the Venice Film Festival, the film has drawn awards buzz, particularly for Jolie’s nuanced portrayal.

Recalling her preparation for the role, Jolie spoke of the emotional journey she experienced during her first singing lessons. “I walked into the room with the piano, and somebody said, ‘OK, let’s see where you’re at.’ I took a deep breath, let out a sound, and started crying,” she revealed. “We often don’t realize how much we hold inside and how that affects our sound and voice.”

Maria Callas remains a towering figure in opera, celebrated for her artistry and emotional depth. Jolie’s commitment to honoring Callas’ legacy resonates with audiences, cementing the opera singer’s enduring influence and the actress’s ongoing evolution as a performer.
