December 5, 2024: Fans of The Continental, the John Wick spinoff series, hoping for a second season will be disappointed to learn that the show will not return for another installment. The prequel series, which debuted on Peacock in September 2023, was always envisioned as a limited series, and it wrapped up its storyline with its three-episode run.
In a recent interview, producer Basil Iwanyk confirmed that a second season will not be in the works. He reflected on the show’s first season, expressing satisfaction with how it concluded and acknowledging that while there were discussions about a potential continuation, the decision was made to not pursue it further. Iwanyk shared, “I think we were happy with season one… I think the feeling is, if we’re going to have something on television in the John Wick universe, this Robert Levine version that we went out with, that we’re negotiating with somebody, is probably the better option for the John Wick content in the TV world.”
Despite The Continental being a one-season show, Iwanyk was proud of the project, especially its 1970s setting, and praised director Albert Hughes for his creative vision. “I loved making The Continental. I loved the 70s of [it]. I loved Albert Hughes. Everything about it. I think it was a really cool, crazy idea for it,” he commented.
Looking forward, Iwanyk revealed that future projects within the John Wick universe will focus more on expanding and shaping the direction of the entire franchise. This includes the highly anticipated new spinoff, John Wick: Under the High Table, which has already generated significant buzz. This series will be executive produced by Keanu Reeves and directed by Chad Stahelski, who will also direct the pilot episode. Written by Robert Levine (co-creator of The Old Man), Under the High Table will pick up directly after the events of John Wick: Chapter 4, promising to explore even more of the John Wick world and its deeper connections.
Iwanyk hinted that this new series, rather than The Continental, will be the primary vehicle for expanding the John Wick universe on television. While The Continental explored the backstory of the iconic hotel, Under the High Table will delve into the broader mythology that fans have come to love, following the aftermath of John Wick 4.
In addition to the TV spinoff, Iwanyk reassured fans that the John Wick franchise is far from over. A fifth John Wick film is currently in development, ensuring that both the cinematic and television worlds of the franchise will continue to thrive with thrilling action and deepened lore.
Although The Continental will not be returning for a second season, the John Wick franchise remains very much alive and full of potential for future storytelling, keeping fans eagerly anticipating what comes next.
