Mexican Actress Dies After Consuming Frog Venom in Controversial Cleansing Ritual

December 5, 2024: Mexican actress Marcela Alcazar Rodriguez tragically passed away on December 1 after participating in a controversial cleansing ritual at a spiritual retreat in Mexico. The 37-year-old was attending a Healer Training Diploma program when she consumed a substance known as Kambo, derived from the venom of the Amazonian giant monkey frog.

Kambo, traditionally used by some South American tribes for purported detoxification, involves applying or ingesting the venom. The practice has gained popularity among wellness enthusiasts but remains banned in several countries due to its associated health risks.

Witnesses reported that Rodriguez initially resisted medical assistance after experiencing severe vomiting and diarrhea, common reactions during the ritual. However, she eventually sought help when her condition worsened. She was rushed to a Red Cross hospital but could not be saved.

Rodriguez was identified by the Mexican production company Mapache Films, which shared a heartfelt tribute on Instagram:
“With deep regret, we mourn the death of our beloved colleague and friend, Marcela Alcazar Rodriguez. Her passing leaves an immense void in our hearts and in the professional community. Her dedication, joy, and commitment profoundly impacted all of us who had the privilege of working alongside her.”

The incident has sparked debates about the safety of such traditional practices, which are often marketed as wellness therapies. Experts urge caution, emphasizing the potential dangers of using unregulated substances for health or spiritual purposes.
