Geneva, Switzerland – December 9: United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called on the people of Syria to embrace a “historic opportunity” to rebuild their nation following the sudden fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime. The long-time president fled the country after Syrian rebels entered Damascus on Sunday, ending his over two-decade rule.
In a statement, Guterres emphasized that Syria’s future must be determined by its own citizens. “After 14 years of brutal war and the fall of the dictatorial regime, today the people of Syria can seize a historic opportunity to build a stable and peaceful future. My Special Envoy will work with Syrians to ensure an inclusive and orderly political transition,” he said.
UN’s Commitment to Rebuilding Syria
Guterres reaffirmed the UN’s dedication to supporting Syria through this pivotal time. He stressed the need for reconciliation, justice, and prosperity, alongside the protection of human rights for all Syrians.
“There is much to do to ensure a peaceful transition to renewed institutions. I call for calm, respect for international law, and the inviolability of diplomatic premises. Syria’s sovereignty, unity, independence, and territorial integrity must be restored,” Guterres stated.
He called for global cooperation to support Syria’s political transition, ensuring it aligns with the legitimate aspirations of its diverse population. “The UN remains committed to helping Syrians build a nation where freedom, justice, and prosperity are shared realities for all,” he added.
Global Leaders React
US President Joe Biden also celebrated the fall of Assad’s regime, describing it as a “fundamental act of justice” and a turning point for Syria.
“After 13 years of civil war and more than five decades of authoritarian rule under Assad and his father, the regime has fallen. This moment offers the Syrian people a chance to rebuild their nation and create a better future,” Biden said.
The Fall of Damascus
The rapid resurgence of the Syrian civil war saw rebel forces taking control of key cities, including Aleppo, Homs, and Daraa, before entering Damascus unopposed. Opposition leaders declared the capital “free of Bashar al-Assad,” signaling the end of his regime.
“The tyrant Bashar al-Assad has fled,” Syrian opposition groups announced, marking the culmination of weeks of rebel advances. The capture of Syria’s third-largest city, Homs, preceded the dramatic fall of Damascus.
