December 13, 2024: Indian Grandmaster D Gukesh scripted history on Thursday by becoming the youngest-ever World Chess Champion. The 18-year-old defeated defending champion Ding Liren of China in the decisive Game 14 of the 2024 World Chess Championship held in Singapore.
The match was poised for a tie-break decider on Friday until Ding’s critical blunder — moving his rook adjacent to his king — handed Gukesh the opportunity to seal the game. Gukesh capitalised on the mistake with precision, securing the title and ending the reign of the Chinese champion.

At just 18 years, 8 months, and 14 days, Gukesh shattered the long-standing record of Garry Kasparov, who was 22 years and 6 months old when he became World Champion in 1985.
