Raj Kapoor and Nargis: A Bond That Shaped and Shattered Him

Raj Kapoor and Nargis’ alleged love affair began during the filming of Shree 420. Nargis was just 16, while Raj Kapoor was already married to Krishna Raj Kapoor. Their relationship spanned seven years, but despite the deep bond they shared, it ended painfully when Raj Kapoor refused to divorce his wife, citing his Hindu beliefs.

Nargis, heartbroken, sought solace in actor Sunil Dutt, who famously saved her from a fire on the sets of Mother India. The two married in 1958, leaving Raj Kapoor devastated.

Raj Kapoor’s Downward Spiral

According to The Kapoor: The First Film Family of Indian Cinema by Madhu Jain, Raj Kapoor took Nargis’ marriage to Sunil Dutt as a personal betrayal. Unable to cope with the heartbreak, he turned to alcohol and began exhibiting self-destructive behavior. In his despair, he even burnt himself with cigarette butts.

Raj Kapoor’s grief wasn’t confined to private spaces; it spilled into his family life. Krishna Raj Kapoor, in a conversation with journalist Bunny Reuben, revealed the extent of his anguish. She recounted how Raj Kapoor would come home drunk night after night, crying uncontrollably for Nargis. On more than one occasion, he reportedly collapsed in the bathtub, overcome by his emotions.

Their First Meeting: A Magical Memory

In Raj Kapoor: The One and Only Showman by Ritu Nanda, Raj Kapoor reminisced about his first meeting with Nargis. Recalling the day, he described it as if he had seen an “angel.” “The door opened, and what did I see? An angel standing before me. She had short hair, with a lock of it falling across one eye… like she was looking at me with just one eye. Woh kisi pari se kam nahin thi.”

This poignant moment of their first encounter was later immortalized on screen in Bobby, where Dimple Kapadia’s character opens the door in a similar fashion when Rishi Kapoor’s character first sees her.
