Former Australian coach praises Indian pacer’s stellar Border-Gavaskar Trophy performance
Melbourne [Australia], December 19: Former Australian head coach Justin Langer has praised Indian pace sensation Jasprit Bumrah for his standout performance in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy, likening him to legendary Pakistani pacer Wasim Akram. Langer referred to Bumrah as the “right-hand version of Wasim Akram” and commended his exceptional skill set and consistency.
Bumrah: India’s Bowling Virtuoso
Bumrah has been a force to reckon with in the series, leading the wicket-taking charts with 21 scalps in three matches at an astounding average of 10.90 and a strike rate of 25.14. The Indian pacer has also bagged two five-wicket hauls, with best figures of 6/76.
While Mohammed Siraj has provided strong support with 13 wickets at an average of 23.92, Bumrah’s ability to deliver unplayable deliveries consistently has made him the standout performer, earning him the moniker of India’s “One Man Army.”
Langer’s High Praise
Speaking on The Nightly, Langer, who considers Wasim Akram the “best bowler he has ever faced,” drew comparisons between the two.
“I would hate to face him (Bumrah). He is like Wasim Akram. For me, he is a right-hand version of Wasim Akram, and every time I am asked the question ‘who is the best bowler you have ever faced,’ I say Wasim Akram,” said Langer.
The former coach highlighted Bumrah’s precision, swing, and seam control.
“He has the ability to swing the ball both ways, and his seam presentation is picture-perfect. When it comes out of his fingers perfectly, he achieves the ‘double whammy’—swing in the right conditions and seam movement off the pitch. That’s what Akram used to do, making him a nightmare for batsmen,” he added.
Bumrah’s Achievements Down Under
Bumrah has solidified his legacy as India’s most successful pacer in Australia, with 53 wickets at an average of 17.15, surpassing Kapil Dev’s 51 scalps. With best figures of 6/33 in Australia, he also boasts three five-wicket hauls in the country.
The 38-year-old is now on the brink of another milestone, needing just six wickets to reach 200 in Tests. In 43 matches, Bumrah has claimed 194 wickets at an average of 19.52, with 12 five-wicket hauls to his name.
Series Decider at MCG
With the Border-Gavaskar Trophy tied at 1-1, all eyes will be on Bumrah as India and Australia gear up for the fourth Test at Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), starting December 26.
Bumrah’s consistency, combined with his ability to adapt to varying conditions, makes him the linchpin of India’s bowling attack as they aim for a decisive victory in the series.
