Trump clarifies constitutional rules barring Musk from presidency while addressing his growing influence in politics.
December 23, 2024: In a recent address at a Republican conference in Phoenix, Arizona, former US President Donald Trump dismissed any speculation about Elon Musk potentially becoming President of the United States. Trump responded to growing criticism from the Democratic camp, which referred to the Tesla and SpaceX CEO as “President Musk” due to his increasing influence in Trump’s political circles.

Trump stated firmly, “He’s not gonna be president, that I can tell you. You know why he can’t be? He wasn’t born in this country.”
Constitutional Roadblock
As per the US Constitution, only natural-born US citizens are eligible to run for the presidency. Musk, originally from South Africa, does not meet this requirement, effectively ruling out any future presidential ambitions.

Musk’s Political Influence Under Scrutiny
Elon Musk, who is expected to serve as Trump’s “efficiency czar” in the event of a Republican administration, has become a significant talking point in recent political debates. Democrats have raised concerns about an unelected billionaire wielding such substantial power in governmental decision-making.

Trump assured his supporters, saying, “No, no, that’s not happening,” in response to suggestions of Musk taking over presidential responsibilities.
Musk’s Role in Political Decisions
The tech billionaire’s influence was evident during a recent government funding proposal standoff. Musk used his social media platform, X (formerly Twitter), to rally his 200+ million followers, criticising the bipartisan funding agreement.
His campaign, alongside Trump, reportedly influenced Republicans to backtrack on their agreed funding proposal, pushing the US government to the brink of a shutdown just before Christmas. However, a last-minute agreement was reached in Congress, narrowly averting a crisis.
A Growing Debate
While Musk’s rising involvement in political matters continues to draw sharp criticism from Democrats and even some Republicans, Trump’s dismissal of Musk’s presidential eligibility under constitutional law clarifies at least one speculation.
