December 23, 2024: Travis Head’s absence from Australia’s net session ahead of the Boxing Day Test against India has raised concerns, especially given his form in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The explosive batter, a key player in Australia’s top order, was notably sidelined during Monday’s practice, with reports from The Sydney Morning Herald indicating that the session was optional. Head had limped between wickets during his innings in the third Test at The Gabba, and although he did not take the field later in that match, he downplayed his injury, saying he was “just a little sore” and expected to be fit for the next match.
"Who do you think should be India’s opening pair in Test matches? 🏏 Should it be the experienced duo of Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul, the fresh energy of Yashasvi Jaiswal alongside Rohit, or perhaps KL Rahul with Jaiswal? Share your thoughts and reasoning below!"#KLRahul𓃵…

Head has been a significant thorn in India’s side this series, amassing 409 runs at an average of 81.80 — the highest of any player from either team. His performances, including a match-winning 140 in Adelaide and a blistering 152 in Brisbane, have been pivotal in putting Australia in commanding positions. If Head is unable to participate in the Boxing Day Test, his absence will undoubtedly be a blow to Australia, given his ability to dominate India’s bowlers.
Australia’s main training session is set for Tuesday, where Head will need to prove his fitness. A follow-up optional session will occur on Christmas Day. This will be crucial in determining whether Head will be available for the upcoming Test.
Meanwhile, Steven Smith, who ended his century drought with a composed 101 last week, participated in a long throwdown session with coach Andrew McDonald. Marnus Labuschagne and Usman Khawaja, struggling for form in the series, continued to work hard during the session. Labuschagne has managed just 82 runs in the series so far, while Khawaja has been even less prolific, with only 63 runs at an average of 12.6.
Australia’s squad for the Boxing Day Test includes:
Pat Cummins (c), Sean Abbott, Scott Boland, Alex Carey, Travis Head (vc), Josh Inglis, Usman Khawaja, Sam Konstas, Marnus Labuschagne, Nathan Lyon, Mitchell Marsh, Jhye Richardson, Steve Smith (vc), Mitchell Starc, and Beau Webster
Both teams will be hoping to settle on their final line-ups in the coming days, as they prepare for the prestigious Boxing Day Test.
