December 23, 2024: Denzel Washington, the iconic two-time Oscar-winning actor, has taken a profound step in his spiritual journey, marking a significant personal milestone by getting baptised. The 69-year-old star of Gladiator II received both a baptismal certificate and a minister’s licence, putting him on the path to ordination. The ceremony took place at the Kelly Temple Church of God in Christ in Harlem, New York, with the service being live-streamed by the First Jurisdiction Church of God in Christ Eastern New York via Facebook.
In the days leading up to his 70th birthday, Washington shared his joy and reflection on the milestone. “In one week I turn 70. It took a while, but I’m here,” he said, expressing gratitude after the baptism. He also thanked his wife, Pauletta Washington, for her support in his spiritual journey.
Throughout his career, Washington has been open about his Christian faith. In a previous interview with Esquire, he boldly stated that while religion may be a sensitive or “unfashionable” topic in Hollywood, he is unafraid to speak openly about his beliefs. “I’m unafraid. I don’t care what anyone thinks,” he wrote in an essay for the magazine. He added that while discussing faith in Hollywood might not be common, it doesn’t diminish the fact that many in the industry share his beliefs. Washington also pointed out that there is no “Hollywood” when it comes to religion, emphasizing the individuality of each person’s spiritual journey.
Meanwhile, Washington is continuing to thrive in his professional career. He is currently receiving acclaim for his role in Gladiator II, Ridley Scott’s highly anticipated sequel to the 2000 epic. In the film, Washington stars alongside Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal, Connie Nielsen, and Joseph Quinn. In addition to his work on Gladiator II, the Oscar-winning actor revealed that he has a role in Black Panther 3, with director Ryan Coogler writing a part specifically for him.
Speaking about his career, Washington shared his current focus: “At this point in my career, I’m only interested in working with the best. I don’t know how many more films I’m going to make, probably not that many. I want to do things that I haven’t done.” He revealed some exciting upcoming projects, including portraying Othello at the age of 70, playing Hannibal, and collaborating with director Steve McQueen on a future film. However, it was his comment about Black Panther 3 that generated the most buzz. Washington confirmed his involvement with the Marvel franchise, adding, “After that, Ryan Coogler is writing a part for me in the next Black Panther. After that, I’m going to do the film Othello. After that, I’m going to do King Lear. After that, I’m going to retire.”
Washington’s impressive body of work includes his Academy Award wins for Glory (1989) and Training Day (2001). As he approaches his 70th birthday, the actor’s combination of personal growth and professional ambition continues to inspire both fans and the film industry alike.
