“President Droupadi Murmu and Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar honor Dr. Manmohan Singh’s legacy, recognizing his pivotal role in India’s economic reforms and leadership.”

New Delhi, December 27: President Droupadi Murmu expressed deep sorrow over the passing of former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, highlighting his critical contributions to India’s economic reforms and his dedicated service to the nation.

In her condolence message on X (formerly Twitter), President Murmu stated, “Former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh Ji was one of those rare politicians who also straddled the worlds of academia and administration with equal ease. In his various roles in public offices, he made critical contributions to reforming the Indian economy. He will always be remembered for his service to the nation, his unblemished political life, and his utmost humility. His passing is a great loss to all of us.”

She further added, “I pay my respectful homage to one of the greatest sons of Bharat and convey my heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and admirers.”

Dr. Manmohan Singh, aged 92, passed away at AIIMS, Delhi, on Thursday night due to age-related medical conditions.

Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar also paid tribute to Dr. Singh, remembering him as the architect of India’s economic liberalization in 1991.

In his condolence message, Dhankhar said, “A Padma Vibhushan awardee and architect of India’s economic liberalisation in 1991, he boldly steered our nation through a critical transition, opening new pathways for growth and prosperity. His profound understanding of the economy, gentle demeanor, and unwavering commitment to India’s progress will forever be etched in my memory. In Dr. Singh’s passing, India has lost a leader of towering intellect and a statesman par excellence. His legacy will forever guide Bharat’s growth trajectory.”

Dr. Manmohan Singh, born in Punjab in 1932, served two consecutive terms as Prime Minister of India from 2004 to 2014. He first assumed office after the Congress’ victory in the 2004 Lok Sabha election against the Atal Bihari Vajpayee-led NDA and was re-elected in 2009. He was succeeded by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2014.

Earlier this year, Dr. Singh retired from the Rajya Sabha, concluding a 33-year tenure in the Upper House of Parliament.

The nation mourns the loss of a visionary leader and economist, whose contributions have left an indelible mark on India’s growth and progress.
