Despite Delhi Capitals’ recent victory over Gujarat Titans, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) still have a slim chance to make it to the playoffs in the current Indian Premier League (IPL) season. RCB finds themselves at the bottom of the league table, having accumulated just two points from eight games, along with a negative net run rate (NRR) of -1.046.
For RCB to qualify for the playoffs, they must win all their remaining six matches, beginning with their next game against Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on Thursday. Securing these wins would elevate their points tally to 14. However, RCB’s advancement isn’t just dependent on their performance; it also hinges on the results of other matches and requires a significant improvement in their NRR.
Considering the current standings, if the top three teams—Rajasthan Royals, Kolkata Knight Riders, and Sunrisers Hyderabad—secure wins in four and five of their next six and seven games, respectively, they would end with 22, 20, and 20 points. Under these circumstances, RCB, with 14 points, might just clinch the fourth spot if other competing teams finish with 12 points or fewer.
Although it’s less likely, there is even a possibility for RCB to ascend to the third spot. This would require the top teams to secure only a single win in their remaining matches—a scenario that seems improbable.
RCB’s road to the playoffs involves games against SRH, two matches against Gujarat Titans, as well as clashes with Punjab Kings, Delhi Capitals, and Chennai Super Kings. While mathematically still in the race, RCB needs a strong turnaround in performance to make a credible push for the playoffs.
