Kanpur (UP), November 14 – Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav welcomed the Supreme Court’s verdict limiting demolition actions in Uttar Pradesh, taking a jab at the Yogi Adityanath-led government by saying that the BJP’s “bulldozer will remain parked in the garage.” Yadav’s comments came during a rally in the Sisamau Assembly constituency of Kanpur, where bypolls are set for November 20.
At the rally, Yadav remarked, “The Supreme Court has spoken against the bulldozer actions that have become a symbol of this government. I thank the Court for standing up to this injustice.” He continued, “Today, at least, their bulldozer will remain parked, and no one’s house will be destroyed without due process.”
Earlier in the day, the Supreme Court mandated that no demolition can proceed without a 15-day prior notice to the property owner and without following proper legal guidelines. The Court emphasized that the executive cannot act as judge and carry out punishments by demolishing properties without due process. Justices BR Gavai and KV Vishwanathan stated in their judgment, “The executive cannot act as judge, assume guilt, and punish by demolishing property. This would overstep its authority.”
Yadav also expressed confidence that the ruling would bring relief to communities impacted by such demolitions and indicated faith that imprisoned MLAs would one day return to serve as they had before.
