Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz is set to face off against Novak Djokovic in the Wimbledon 2024 men’s singles final on Sunday at the iconic Centre Court of the All England Club. The highly anticipated match is scheduled to start at 6:30 PM Indian Standard Time (IST).
This marks Alcaraz’s second appearance in a Wimbledon final, while Djokovic, a seven-time champion at Centre Court, will be aiming to equal Roger Federer’s record of eight Wimbledon men’s singles titles.
In the semi-final, Alcaraz overcame fourth-seeded Daniil Medvedev, bouncing back from losing the first set to win 6-7, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4. Meanwhile, second-seeded Djokovic defeated Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti in straight sets 6-4, 7-6, 6-4 to secure his place in the final.
The two players previously faced each other in a marathon Wimbledon final last year, which lasted four hours and 42 minutes, making it the third-longest in history. Alcaraz emerged victorious, securing his second Grand Slam title and ending Djokovic’s pursuit of a fifth-straight Wimbledon title.
Carlos Alcaraz, currently ranked third in the ATP tennis rankings, recently claimed the French Open men’s singles title by defeating Alexander Zverev in the final. World No. 2 Djokovic, who won three major titles last year, reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open earlier this year but withdrew from his Roland Garros quarter-final against Casper Ruud due to a knee injury.
With 24 Grand Slam titles to his name, Djokovic is tied with Margaret Court. A victory on Sunday will take his tally to 25, making him the player with the most Major titles in tennis history.
Alcaraz and Djokovic have faced each other five times before, with the Serbian leading their head-to-head with three wins. They have met twice in Grand Slams, both last year, at the Wimbledon final and the French Open semi-final. While Djokovic triumphed in Paris, Alcaraz won the Wimbledon final.
This final will be their first meeting in 2024, promising an exciting and highly competitive showdown.
