October 10, 2024: On the eve of Amitabh Bachchan’s 82nd birthday, producer Anand Pandit has revealed plans for a much-awaited sequel to the 1978 classic Trishul. Pandit, who has often spoken about how Bachchan’s character, Vijay, inspired him, wants to continue the story of the fearless construction mogul in Trishul 2.
“I’ve watched Trishul almost 60 times, and it left a deep impact on me when it first released,” Pandit shared. “The story of a man who comes to the city with nothing and builds an empire in the construction business inspired me to move to Mumbai and chase my dreams.” The producer calls this project his tribute to Bachchan, who he credits with shaping his personal and professional journey.
Trishul, directed by the late Yash Chopra and starring Sanjeev Kumar, Shashi Kapoor, Waheeda Rehman, Rakhee, and Hema Malini, is considered a cinematic masterpiece. It told the story of Vijay, an illegitimate son who sought revenge on his father by trying to destroy him. In the sequel, Pandit plans to explore Vijay’s later life, after being accepted into the Gupta family. “It’s fascinating to think about what happened after the events of the original film,” Pandit said. “Did Vijay live happily ever after with Geeta? Did his own family grow, and was he able to finally heal from his emotional scars?”
While the project is still in its early stages, Pandit has yet to speak to Bachchan or the original creators, but the story is ready. If the sequel materialises, it will mark Pandit’s fifth collaboration with Bachchan, following Sarkar 3 (2017), Chehre (2021), Fakt Mahilao Maate (2022), and the upcoming Fakt Purusho Maate.
“This isn’t just a professional project for me; it’s a heartfelt tribute to the superstar who has meant so much to me,” Pandit expressed. As for the director, he added, “I haven’t decided yet, but I’d like to work with a young, fresh director for this project.”
