Andrew Garfield Reflects on His “Healing” Return as Spider-Man in No Way Home

Actor Andrew Garfield recently discussed his unexpected comeback as Spider-Man in the 2021 film Spider-Man: No Way Home. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Garfield described his return as “really healing,” particularly after the uncertainty following the cancellation of The Amazing Spider-Man 3. After the lukewarm reception of the second installment in that series, Garfield’s future in the Spider-Man franchise seemed doubtful.

However, the opportunity to join the multiverse storyline alongside Tobey Maguire and Tom Holland reinvigorated Garfield’s connection to the character. “I love that character, and it brings joy,” Garfield said, noting that his return to the role was uplifting for him.

When asked about potentially returning to the role in the future, Garfield expressed openness, contingent on the project’s significance. He emphasized that he would return “100 percent” if the project had a unique and meaningful concept. He explained, “If it’s additive to the culture, if there’s a great concept or something that hasn’t been done before that’s unique and odd and exciting.”

Spider-Man: No Way Home was a massive box-office hit, grossing nearly USD 2 billion worldwide after its December 2021 release. While the possibility of a fourth installment remains uncertain, Tom Holland hinted in June 2023 that discussions about a sequel were underway. Holland revealed that early talks centered on finding a compelling reason to continue the story, indicating the creative team was focused on ensuring the project had a strong purpose.

Reports suggest that director Destin Daniel Cretton is in talks to helm Spider-Man 4, with Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers returning to write the script. Marvel’s Kevin Feige and Sony’s Amy Pascal are set to produce, and Holland is expected to reprise his role as the beloved superhero.

As Garfield prepares for the release of his upcoming film We Live in Time alongside Florence Pugh, he shared that he’s eager to return to acting after a two-year hiatus. “I feel looser, less precious, and more joyful,” Garfield said, expressing enthusiasm about the next phase of his career.

The actor emphasized that he’s embracing a renewed sense of freedom and enjoyment in his craft, signaling an exciting chapter ahead.
