October 22, 2024: Annu Kapoor, the versatile actor known for his diverse roles across film, television, and radio, recently reflected on his experience working with Priyanka Chopra in Vishal Bhardwaj’s 2011 film 7 Khoon Maaf. Kapoor portrayed Inspector Keemat Lal, one of Susanna’s (played by Priyanka Chopra) husbands in the black comedy based on Ruskin Bond’s short story.
Kapoor candidly addressed reports from the time suggesting that Priyanka refused to do an intimate scene with him. He explained that Vishal Bhardwaj informed him that Priyanka felt uncomfortable with the scene, leading Kapoor to suggest cutting it altogether. However, Bhardwaj insisted that the scene was necessary, and Kapoor ultimately shot both a combined scene and a solo one. He shared that his solo shot received praise on set.
Addressing the media buzz around the incident, Kapoor remarked that the situation likely stemmed from a perceived difference in his status as a character actor versus a leading man. He implied that had he been the “hero” of the film, Priyanka might not have had the same hesitations. Kapoor explained, “The simple thing is, if I were a hero, Priyanka Chopra wouldn’t have had any problem. She doesn’t have any problem in kissing a hero. Then there is me. I don’t have a face. I don’t have a personality. That’s why there’s a problem.”
Despite the controversy, Annu Kapoor remains a respected actor, known for his stellar performances in films like Vicky Donor, Jolly LLB 2, and Aitraaz. He also received a National Award for his role in Vicky Donor. Kapoor’s frankness and multi-faceted career have cemented his place as one of Indian cinema’s most memorable and beloved personalities. His recent project, The Signature, saw him share the screen with actors like Anupam Kher and Mahima Chaudhry.
