Pakistan captain Babar Azam faced criticism from former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan and cricket commentator Harsha Bhogle for his slow-paced knock against the USA in the ongoing T20 World Cup, where the co-hosts pulled off an early upset by defeating Pakistan in a Super Over thriller.
Babar struggled on the Dallas surface, scoring just nine runs off his first 23 deliveries. However, he adjusted and ended with a strike rate of over 170 before being dismissed for 44 off 43 balls.
Pathan took an indirect jibe at Babar, suggesting that a captain should not play a 40+ ball inning with a 100 strike rate on a fairly decent batting condition, as it does not help the team’s cause.
Bhogle echoed Pathan’s sentiments, noting that while Babar has played many fine innings, this particular knock did not seem to reflect his usual rhythm, especially on a decent surface.
The criticism highlights the scrutiny that top players like Babar face, even in the high-pressure environment of a World Cup match.
