‘Being with My People is My Biggest Medal’: Vinesh Phogat

Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat recently returned to her hometown of Jhajjar, Haryana, after a challenging experience at the Paris Olympics, where she missed out on a medal. Despite the disappointment, Vinesh expressed a deep sense of gratitude and fulfillment, stating that the support of her people is the greatest reward she could have received.

During her visit on Sunday, Vinesh was honored in a felicitation ceremony for her remarkable achievements in wrestling. The occasion was made even more special as it coincided with her birthday, adding to the celebrations.

Reflecting on the support she has received, Vinesh said, “I am feeling good, my people are standing with me…Nothing is bigger than that…Who knows about the future…I don’t know what I will do in the future…I am here today among my people, this is my medal…I am happy.”

Vinesh’s journey at the Paris Olympics took an unexpected turn when she was disqualified from the women’s 50kg final due to exceeding the weight limit by just 100 grams. This disqualification prevented her from competing for the gold medal against the United States’ Sarah Ann Hildebrandt. Following the incident, Vinesh appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) for the silver medal, but the application was ultimately dismissed.

Despite this setback, Vinesh remains positive and grounded, finding solace in the support of her hometown. She has since announced her retirement from wrestling, signaling the end of a distinguished career that has inspired many.

Vinesh Phogat’s story is one of resilience and gratitude, proving that sometimes the greatest victories come not from medals but from the unwavering support of one’s community.
