October 9, 2024: Kane Williamson is set to miss the opening Test of New Zealand’s series against India in Bengaluru, due to a groin injury sustained during the second Test against Sri Lanka in Galle.
This injury, which occurred in New Zealand’s 2-0 series defeat to Sri Lanka, has forced Williamson into extended rehabilitation at home. The 34-year-old’s absence is a significant blow for New Zealand as they face India in the challenging conditions of a three-match Test series.
New Zealand selector Sam Wells hoped that Williamson would be available for the latter part of their upcoming Test series.
“The advice we’ve received is that the best course of action is for Kane to rest and rehabilitate now rather than risk aggravating the injury. We’re hopeful that if the rehabilitation goes to plan Kane will be available for the latter part of the tour. While it’s obviously disappointing to not have Kane available from the start of the tour, it provides an opportunity for someone else to play a role in an important series,” Wells was quoted
Williamson’s recovery will determine his availability for the latter part of the tour. Mark Chapman has been added to the squad as cover for him. Tom Latham will captain the side after Tim Southee resigned following the Sri Lanka series.
Williamson, who has been a key figure for New Zealand, has an impressive record in Tests, with 8,881 runs at an average of 54.48.
