Bumrah Equals Kapil Dev’s Monumental Record For The Most Wickets By An Indian Bowler In SENA Countries

November 23, 2024: Jasprit Bumrah’s remarkable achievement of securing his seventh five-wicket haul in SENA countries has placed him in the company of one of India’s greatest fast bowlers, Kapil Dev. In the ongoing first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy at Perth, Bumrah’s sensational spell (5/30 from 18 overs at an economy rate of just 1.67) saw him claim key Australian wickets, including Nathan McSweeney, Usman Khawaja, Steve Smith, Alex Carey, and Pat Cummins.

This feat not only underscores Bumrah’s prowess in challenging conditions but also highlights his growing legacy as one of India’s finest fast bowlers. With 118 wickets in just 27 Tests in SENA countries at an impressive average of 22.55, Bumrah’s impact is undeniable. His seven five-wicket hauls in these conditions are now on par with Kapil Dev, the iconic all-rounder who also achieved seven five-wicket hauls in SENA countries over his illustrious career.

Bumrah’s success in foreign conditions, particularly in SENA countries, marks a turning point for Indian fast bowling. Historically, India struggled to make an impact in these countries, but the tide began to turn in the 2000s. Bumrah’s ability to deliver under pressure in tough environments such as Johannesburg, Melbourne, Nottingham, and now Perth has cemented his place in Indian cricket history.

Additionally, Bumrah has joined a select list of Indian captains to have claimed a five-wicket haul in Tests. He is only the fifth Indian captain to do so, joining the ranks of Vinoo Mankad, Bishan Singh Bedi, Kapil Dev, and Anil Kumble. The last Indian captain to achieve this was Kumble, with his famous 5/84 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in 2007.

With this record, Bumrah continues to build his legacy as an all-condition bowler and a key figure in India’s evolving fast bowling attack. His ability to perform in diverse conditions—from Johannesburg to Perth—has made him one of the most complete fast bowlers of his generation.
