Dr A Velumani urges young professionals to treat careers like marathons amid Amazon’s cost-cutting move; sparks online debate on job security and adaptability.
March 21, 2025: In response to reports that Amazon is planning to lay off 14,000 employees to save around $3.5 billion annually, Thyrocare founder Dr A Velumani took to X (formerly Twitter) to share a sobering message about the emotional rollercoaster faced by professionals during mass layoffs.
“Don’t celebrate too early. Career or business – it’s a marathon race,” Velumani wrote, highlighting how young graduates often celebrate placements with top global brands, only to be blindsided by large-scale job cuts later.

“Imagine how many might have celebrated for getting a campus placement with such brands. Now how many might feel depressed! It is not 10 or 20. 100 or 200. 1000 or 2000. 14000,” he posted.
His words quickly went viral, triggering a flood of responses and sparking a broader discussion around job security, corporate loyalty, and the need for adaptability in the modern job market.
Many users resonated with Velumani’s analogy, agreeing that careers are marathons, not sprints. One user commented, “Job security is a myth. Skills, adaptability, and financial planning matter more than titles.” Another noted, “A job is a sprint, but wealth-building is a marathon. Survival isn’t about speed; it’s about endurance.”

The comments echoed a growing sentiment among professionals who are increasingly aware of the volatile nature of the corporate world, especially in tech sectors where downsizing has become commonplace.
A few users invoked the wisdom of former President APJ Abdul Kalam, saying, “Be loyal to your work, not the company.“

While Amazon has yet to issue a formal statement on the reported layoffs, the news adds to a wave of recent tech job cuts, with companies like Meta and Google also scaling back their workforces to optimize operational costs.
As Dr Velumani aptly reminds, in today’s economy, success isn’t about how fast you start—it’s about how long you endure.
