The e-commerce giant is trialling humanoid robots that could soon replace delivery workers, with field testing already underway in San Francisco.

Amazon may be on the brink of redefining doorstep deliveries with a new generation of humanoid robots that could eventually replace human delivery workers.
According to reports from The Information, cited by The Guardian, the retail giant has already begun testing these robots at a specially constructed “humanoid park” at its San Francisco office. The robots are being trained on an indoor obstacle course—about the size of a coffee shop—to assess their agility, balance, and real-world delivery potential.

The ambitious project envisions these robots springing out of Amazon’s Rivian delivery vans and autonomously delivering packages to customers’ doorsteps. Amazon currently operates 20,000 Rivian vans in the U.S., and one has already been placed in the test maze for simulation runs.

Once the robots master the indoor setup, Amazon plans to take them on field trials, where they’ll be tested in real neighborhoods delivering actual packages.
AI-Powered Logistics Future
Amazon is reportedly developing proprietary artificial intelligence software to power these humanoids, while relying on external hardware partners during the current testing phase. The long-term plan involves integrating the robots into Amazon’s last-mile delivery infrastructure, possibly in conjunction with Zoox, the autonomous robotaxi startup it acquired in 2020.
Even in the short term, the company suggests a hybrid model where a human driver and a robot collaborate—servicing multiple addresses simultaneously to improve efficiency and reduce delivery times.

Amazon’s Digit robots, built by Agility Robotics, are already operational in its warehouses. These humanoid machines assist workers by performing repetitive tasks, with human staff taking on supervisory roles as “robot managers.”
A Broader Automation Push
This move is part of Amazon’s broader shift toward automation. The company, now valued at over $2 trillion, has also received regulatory approval to test drone deliveries beyond visual line-of-sight in the UK—furthering its end-to-end automation ambitions.
If successful, this project could transform the future of e-commerce logistics, but it also raises concerns about the potential displacement of thousands of delivery workers worldwide.
