Apple May Raise iPhone 17 Prices, But Won’t Blame Tariffs: Report
Cupertino/Washington, May 12:
Apple Inc. is preparing to increase prices for its upcoming iPhone 17 series, but the tech giant will avoid linking the hike to US tariffs on Chinese imports, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal. The move comes as Apple navigates rising costs due to tariffs imposed on Chinese-manufactured goods—where most of its devices are still assembled. However, learning from recent political backlash faced by Amazon, Apple aims to sidestep direct blame on tariffs.
In April, Amazon reportedly considered listing tariffs as a line item in checkout prices, prompting harsh criticism from the White House. The e-commerce giant later walked back the idea.
Rather than highlight tariff-driven expenses, Apple will justify the price increase through its product upgrades. Leaks suggest that the iPhone 17 lineup could feature:
To counter the impact of tariffs, Apple has accelerated production in India, reducing its dependence on Chinese manufacturing hubs. CEO Tim Cook recently acknowledged that tariffs could cost the company $900 million this quarter alone, with more expected over time.

Apple’s pricing strategy is unfolding just as the US and China agreed to a 90-day de-escalation in their trade war. On Monday, both sides announced a temporary reduction in reciprocal tariffs:
While the White House labeled it a “trade deal”, the finer details remain vague, with no clear timeline or end goal in sight.
