The Microsoft co-founder believes his children should build their own success and not be overshadowed by inherited wealth.
April 7, 2025: Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has revealed that he plans to leave less than 1% of his $155 billion fortune to his children, believing that wealth should not define their future.
Speaking on the popular podcast Figuring Out With Raj Shamani, the 69-year-old philanthropist said his children have received an excellent upbringing and education, but the bulk of his fortune is destined for philanthropy, not inheritance.

“It’s not a dynasty,” Gates said. “I want to give them a chance to have their own earnings and success. I’m not asking them to run Microsoft.”
He emphasized the importance of not letting his children be “overshadowed by the incredible luck and good fortune” he experienced. Instead, he wants them to make meaningful contributions to the world on their own.

While the estimated 1% inheritance still amounts to $1.55 billion, Gates explained the decision was about values—not numbers.

“You should never confuse financial support with love,” Gates said. “But you should be clear early on about what opportunities you’re giving and why.”
The Legacy of Giving Back
For Gates, the “highest calling” for his vast resources is giving back to those in need, primarily through the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. His philanthropic mission includes global health, education, and poverty alleviation.
He’s not alone in this mindset. Other tech billionaires like Steve Jobs and Jeff Bezos have echoed similar sentiments. Jobs’ widow, Laurene Powell Jobs, has publicly stated that her children will not inherit the billions left by her late husband.
Despite receiving “less than 1%,” the Gates children are still likely to be among the world’s wealthiest, each standing to receive hundreds of millions. Still, for Gates, wealth is not the ultimate gift—it’s opportunity and purpose.
