In a rare but amusing instance, ChatGPT has been credited for saving a user from making a rash career decision. A Reddit user shared a conversation where they planned to quit their job to pursue what they themselves admitted was an “awful” business idea — only for the AI to gently but firmly advise against it.

“You know how some people have lids that don’t have jars that fit them? What if we looked for people with jars that fit those lids,” the Redditor wrote, describing the idea in a now-viral post on r/ChatGPT.

Initially, ChatGPT responded with cautious optimism, calling the pitch “a fascinating metaphor” but was quick to flag the risks. When the user revealed they had already sent a resignation email, ChatGPT pivoted to crisis control, suggesting ways to undo the resignation.

“Simon, do not quit your job to pursue this idea. At least, not yet,” the chatbot advised, urging caution.

The post has since become a viral sensation on social media. Users are praising the AI’s ability to balance supportive enthusiasm with practical reality, especially after earlier criticisms that the AI had become too sycophantic.

Social Media Reactions

The thread drew a flood of reactions:

  • “An idea so bad, even ChatGPT went ‘hol up’,” joked one user.
  • Another said, “GPT being the supportive, optimistic friend, then panicking when they realise they were a little too supportive.”
  • A third added, “Honestly surprising — I expected the AI to hype the idea, but it actually saved the day.”

This instance comes shortly after ChatGPT’s creators updated its 4o model, improving both intelligence and conversational tone. The latest updates seem to have empowered the AI to strike a smarter balance between encouraging ideas and offering realistic feedback.
