China Raises Tariffs on US Goods to 125% Amid Escalating Trade War With Trump Administration
New Delhi, April 11 – In a sharp escalation of the US-China trade war, China announced on Friday that it would raise tariffs on American goods to 125%, up from the previous 84%. The retaliatory move follows US President Donald Trump’s decision to hike tariffs on Chinese imports to a staggering 145%, deepening economic tensions between the world’s two largest economies.

Beijing’s new tariffs will take effect Saturday, according to a statement issued by the State Council Tariff Commission via China’s Finance Ministry.
“The US’s imposition of abnormally high tariffs on China seriously violates international trade rules, basic economic laws and common sense,” the statement read.
China’s Commerce Ministry said the United States must “bear full responsibility” for the economic instability triggered by Washington’s tariff policy. A spokesperson condemned the Trump administration’s strategy, citing its impact on global markets and the multilateral trading system.
“The current world economy, global markets and multilateral trading systems have suffered serious shocks,” the spokesperson said.
Beijing also declared that it would ignore any further hikes, as US goods would become economically unviable to import under the new pricing structure.
Earlier in the day, President Xi Jinping, speaking after a meeting with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, called on the European Union to join China in resisting the United States’ “unilateral bullying”.
“China and Europe should fulfill their international responsibilities… and jointly resist unilateral bullying practices,” Xi said, emphasizing that such unity would safeguard international fairness and justice.
Despite the mounting tensions, President Trump struck a personal tone earlier this week, calling Xi a “smart man” who “loves his country” and predicting a resolution:

“I think he’s going to want to make a deal… We’ll get a phone call at some point, and everything will be ready.”
Trump said the tariff hike was prompted by what he called a “lack of respect” from Beijing.
This week’s escalation follows a rapid series of moves:
With both sides showing no signs of backing down, analysts warn the global trade environment could face significant disruption. The EU’s response will now be closely watched as tensions continue to mount.
