Elon Musk To Buy TikTok? Chinese Consider US Takeover Amid Looming Ban

"Chinese officials explore Musk’s acquisition of TikTok US as January 19 ban deadline approaches, while US lawmakers push for an extension."

January 14, 2025: Washington, D.C.: As TikTok faces a looming ban in the United States, Chinese officials are reportedly considering Elon Musk as a potential buyer for the app's US operations. While the preference remains for TikTok to stay under its parent company, ByteDance, discussions are underway about a contingency plan to sell the platform if the US Supreme Court upholds the ban.

TikTok has appealed to the Supreme Court to block the enforcement of a law that mandates its sale or ban by January 19, but justices seem inclined to uphold the legislation. The Biden administration has highlighted national security concerns over ByteDance’s Chinese ownership, citing risks of data misuse and foreign influence operations.

Musk’s Strategic Interest

Elon Musk’s potential acquisition of TikTok could serve multiple purposes. TikTok’s 170 million US users would bolster Musk's struggling social media platform, X (formerly Twitter), attracting advertisers and diversifying revenue streams. Additionally, Musk’s AI venture, xAI, could leverage TikTok’s vast user data to enhance its chatbot, Grok, and expand its real-time search capabilities.

Chinese officials reportedly view Musk as a favorable buyer who could negotiate terms with the incoming Trump administration, easing tensions over national security concerns.

US Lawmakers Call for Deadline Extension

Two Democratic lawmakers have urged President Biden to extend the January 19 deadline to prevent a ban that would affect millions of Americans reliant on TikTok for social connections and economic activities. Senator Edward Markey is also introducing legislation to delay the ban by 270 days, emphasizing the app's cultural and economic significance.

“A TikTok ban would dismantle a one-of-a-kind informational and cultural ecosystem, silencing millions in the process,” Markey stated.

Trump’s Stance on TikTok

President-elect Donald Trump has urged the Supreme Court to delay the ban, seeking time after his January 20 inauguration to explore a negotiated resolution. Trump, who previously advocated for TikTok’s sale to a US company, acknowledged free speech concerns related to the ban.

Why TikTok Faces a Ban

The bipartisan law, passed in April and signed by President Biden, mandates TikTok’s sale or ban by January 19. The legislation prohibits ByteDance from controlling TikTok’s algorithm, which tailors video recommendations and has made the platform a hit among younger users. The Justice Department has warned of “grave national-security threats” posed by Chinese ownership, citing TikTok’s collection of sensitive data from millions of Americans.

The next few weeks will determine whether TikTok survives under new ownership or exits the US market entirely, with Musk emerging as a key figure in the unfolding saga.
