Elon Musk’s Starlink Expands to Bangladesh with Local Partnerships
Dhaka [Bangladesh], March 9: Bangladesh has taken a major step toward revolutionizing its digital landscape as several local firms have partnered with Elon Musk’s Starlink to facilitate the setup of ground earth stations in the country, officials confirmed on Saturday.
The collaboration marks a significant milestone in Bangladesh’s quest for reliable, high-speed internet connectivity, especially in rural and disaster-prone regions.
With a US telecommunications delegation currently in Bangladesh, local firms have already signed agreements with Starlink to support infrastructure development, space allocation, and ongoing maintenance.
"It will ensure uninterrupted and high-quality service. Since the coverage of telecom-grade fibre networks in Bangladesh is limited, and remote areas still face power outages, Starlink will accelerate digital economic activities for entrepreneurs, freelancers, NGOs, and SME businesspeople," said Faiz Ahmad Taiyeb, Special Assistant to the Chief Advisor.
The Starlink team has also surveyed multiple locations to set up earth stations, some of which will be constructed on private properties, while others may utilize government-backed Hitech Park property.
The move comes following a personal appeal from Bangladesh's Chief Adviser, Professor Muhammad Yunus, to Elon Musk.
On February 19, Yunus extended a formal invitation to Musk, urging him to visit Bangladesh and oversee the launch of Starlink’s satellite internet services.
The Chief Adviser emphasized that Musk’s visit would allow him to engage with Bangladesh’s youth, who stand to benefit the most from this advanced technology.
To expedite Starlink’s implementation, Khalilur Rahman, the Chief Adviser’s High Representative, has been tasked with coordinating efforts to ensure the service is ready within the next 90 working days.
Starlink’s expansion into Bangladesh is expected to bridge the connectivity gap in rural and underserved areas, providing a stable, satellite-based alternative that is unaffected by power outages, unreliable fibre networks, and natural disasters.
With discussions on finalizing implementation details still underway, authorities remain hopeful that Starlink will unlock new opportunities for Bangladesh’s digital economy, transforming the country into a tech-driven hub.
