Google Cuts 10% of Managerial Roles Amid Push for 'Googleyness' and AI Innovation
December 20, 2024: New Delhi: In a sweeping move aimed at streamlining operations and increasing efficiency, Google has announced layoffs affecting 10% of its managerial staff, including positions at the manager, director, and vice president levels. CEO Sundar Pichai, during an all-hands meeting, detailed the changes as part of the company’s ongoing efficiency drive.

According to a Google spokesperson quoted by Business Insider, some impacted employees will be transitioned to individual contributor roles, while others will face role eliminations altogether.
The layoffs come amid significant developments in the AI industry. With competitors like OpenAI threatening Google’s dominance in search and AI, the tech giant has accelerated its own efforts, launching Gemini 2.0, its most advanced AI model. Sundar Pichai described the model as ushering in “a new agentic era” of decision-making AI.

This is Google’s fourth round of layoffs in 2024 alone. Earlier this year, the company cut:
The cuts are part of Alphabet Inc.’s efficiency drive launched in September 2022, which led to the elimination of 12,000 roles—6.4% of its global workforce—by January 2023.
In an open letter at the time, Pichai accepted “full responsibility” for the layoffs, attributing them to rapid growth in preceding years and the need to adapt to evolving market demands.
As part of its cultural transformation, Pichai emphasized the need to redefine Googleyness, a term synonymous with the company’s unique hiring and workplace ethos. While the term’s meaning has evolved over time, it continues to symbolize Google’s pursuit of innovation and excellence.
“This is difficult for any company to go through,” Pichai admitted. “At Google, we haven’t faced anything like this in 25 years, but not acting would have made it worse.”
