Repurposed from Project Starline, Google Beam merges AI with light field displays and advanced head tracking to revolutionize remote communication.
Mountain View, May 21, 2025 – At its annual Google I/O 2025 developer conference, Google unveiled Beam, a groundbreaking AI-powered communication platform that transforms traditional 2D video calls into real-time 3D interactions. The new platform is a reimagined version of Project Starline, Google’s earlier attempt at lifelike virtual communication.
What is Google Beam?
Google Beam uses a combination of multiple webcams, AI-driven volumetric video modeling, and a 3D light field display to create highly immersive, real-feel communication. It captures users from multiple angles, merges the video feeds using AI, and renders a three-dimensional image that allows for eye contact, realistic depth perception, and subtle facial cue recognition—elements often missing in traditional video conferencing.
The system includes millimetre-accurate head tracking at 60 frames per second, making the virtual interaction feel significantly more natural and dynamic.
Enterprise-Ready and AI-Enhanced
Built on Google Cloud, Beam is designed for enterprise-grade reliability and seamless integration with existing workflows. According to Google, the platform will initially roll out on HP devices later this year. Future updates are expected to include real-time speech translation, which could greatly enhance multilingual business communication. The translation feature will also start rolling out to Google Meet beginning today.
From Starline to Beam: A New Vision
Originally introduced at Google I/O 2021, Project Starline promised natural-scale 3D video chats with spatially accurate audio. Though it never fully launched commercially, its core technology has now been evolved into Beam—a more scalable, AI-first solution that merges innovation with practicality for remote work and enterprise environments.
Google Beam stands at the intersection of AI, optics, and immersive computing, offering a glimpse into the future of how we connect—beyond flat screens and pixelated calls.
