Has the HDFC Bank's Board Approved First Ever Bonus Shares and a Special Dividend? Here are All the Details
July-21, 2025: HDFC Bank Ltd., India’s largest private sector lender, has announced a 1:1 bonus share issue and a special dividend of ₹5 per share, following its board meeting on Saturday, July 19, 2025. This means shareholders will receive one free share for every share held as on the record date, which is yet to be announced.
The board has fixed Friday, July 25, as the record date for the special dividend. This major announcement comes after HDFC Bank secured ₹10,000 crore from its partial stake sale in HDB Financial Services during the latter’s IPO.
This is the first time in its history that HDFC Bank has issued bonus shares. Historically, the bank has only undertaken stock splits:
HDFC Bank had previously paid a final dividend of ₹22 per share last month, following payouts of ₹19.5 in May 2024, ₹19 in May 2023, and ₹15.5 in May 2022.
As of the June 2025 quarter, HDFC Bank had over 36 lakh small retail shareholders, holding a 10.32% stake.
On Friday, HDFC Bank shares closed 1.6% lower at ₹1,956, despite being up 10% so far in 2025 and 1.1% over the past month.
