India Overtakes Japan to Become World’s Fourth Largest Economy: NITI Aayog
May 25, 2025: New Delhi: India has officially surpassed Japan to become the world’s fourth largest economy, NITI Aayog CEO BVR Subrahmanyam announced on Saturday. Speaking to reporters after the 10th Governing Council meeting of NITI Aayog, Subrahmanyam attributed the milestone to a robust geopolitical and economic climate favoring India’s growth.

“We are the fourth largest economy as I speak. We are a USD 4 trillion economy,” Subrahmanyam said, citing the latest IMF data.
Currently, only the US, China, and Germany stand ahead of India in economic size. Subrahmanyam expressed optimism that India could ascend further:
“If we stick to what is being planned and thought through, in 2.5 to 3 years, we will be the third largest economy.”
Addressing recent remarks by US President Donald Trump—who urged Apple to manufacture iPhones in the US instead of India—Subrahmanyam said:

“What the tariff will be is uncertain. Given the dynamics, we will remain a cost-effective place to manufacture.”
Subrahmanyam also revealed that the government is preparing a second round of its asset monetisation pipeline, with details expected to be announced in August.
