Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority Flags Lapses In Health Insurance Claims, Issues Show-Cause Notices
July 12, 2025: According to those acquainted with the situation, the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) has taken action against eight insurance companies after discovering serious flaws in their health insurance portfolios.
Niva Bupa, Star Health, Care Health, ManipalCigna, New India Assurance, Tata AIG, ICICI Lombard, and HDFC Ergo are among the insurers that are being examined.
Due to operational shortcomings and non-compliance that were allegedly discovered during regulatory inspections and data checks, the IRDAI is currently sending these companies show-cause warnings.
IRDAI has already issued a number of regulatory prescriptions and circulars, including the comprehensive health insurance master circular, which ICICI Lombard accepted. The regulator still has the authority to check all registered insurers, according to New India Assurance.
The action demonstrates IRDAI’s renewed focus on policyholder protection, openness, and adherence to rules, especially in the rapidly expanding health insurance market. It is anticipated that these notifications will elicit thorough answers from the relevant insurers, who might be asked to clarify procedures or implement corrective measures.
After the official notices are issued and the responses are examined, more information is probably going to become available.
