
"Masterclass in Diplomacy": CNN Applauds PM Modi's Negotiations with Trump
February 15, 2025: Washington DC: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the United States has been hailed as a “masterclass in diplomacy” by American media, particularly CNN, after he successfully navigated trade tensions with US President Donald Trump and secured multiple agreements.

PM Modi’s visit coincided with Trump’s announcement of sweeping reciprocal tariffs, a move that could have strained bilateral ties. However, Modi leveraged the situation to India’s advantage, turning the discussions into a diplomatic win. The joint statement released post-meeting confirmed that both nations had agreed on advancing negotiations on trade, defense, energy, technology, and security cooperation.

CNN’s senior journalist Will Ripley praised PM Modi’s diplomatic strategy, stating that other world leaders could learn from his approach in dealing with Trump.
“Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi understood the assignment. It could’ve been bad. He was in DC the same day Trump announced dreaded reciprocal tariffs. Despite trade friction, both sides walked away with deliverables,” Ripley noted.

The MIGA + MAGA = MEGA slogan coined by Modi was also highlighted, with Ripley saying, “This is exactly the kind of messaging and branding that Trump likes to hear.”
During the press conference, when asked who was the tougher negotiator between them, Trump admitted, “PM Modi is a much tougher negotiator than me. There is not even a contest.”
