Howard "Howie" Buffett steps into the role of non-executive chairman of Berkshire Hathaway, following decades of preparation by his legendary father.

January 14, 2025: Billionaire investor Warren Buffett, co-founder of Berkshire Hathaway, has named his middle child, Howard "Howie" Buffett, as his successor. The 70-year-old will take over as the non-executive chairman of the $1 trillion (approximately Rs 86.55 lakh crore) business empire.

In a recent interview with The Wall Street Journal, the 94-year-old magnate revealed that his remaining wealth would be channeled into a new charitable trust. Despite his immense fortune, Buffett has ensured that his three children—Susie, Howard, and Peter—will not inherit the bulk of his wealth but will instead manage the $140 billion in Berkshire stock allocated for philanthropic endeavours.

On selecting Howard as his successor, Warren Buffett remarked, "He is getting it because he's my son. I'm very, very, very lucky in the fact that I trust all three of my children."

Howard, who has served as a director on Berkshire’s board for over 30 years, expressed his readiness for the role, stating, “I feel I’m prepared for it because he prepared me. That’s a lot of years of influence and a lot of years of teaching.”

Who is Howard Buffett?

  • Early Struggles and Career Path:
    Howard initially faced challenges during his college years but found his direction under Warren Buffett’s guidance. He worked at See’s Candies, a Berkshire-owned company, to gain business experience. Later, he launched his own excavating business before transitioning to farming.
  • Sustainable Agriculture Advocate:
    Howie became a proponent of no-till farming, promoting soil conservation and sustainable agricultural practices. His passion led him to operate a farm purchased by his father, for which he paid market-rate rent.
  • Public Service:
    Howard served on the county board of commissioners and chaired the Nebraska ethanol board. In 2017, he took on the role of sheriff in Macon County, Illinois, drawing from his experience as an auxiliary deputy.
  • Corporate and Philanthropic Leadership:
    Since 1993, Howard has been a director on the boards of several major companies, including Coca-Cola Enterprises and ConAgra Foods. He also founded a charitable organization focusing on conservation and authored eight books on related topics.
  • Family:
    Howard married Devon Morse and has a son, Howard Warren Buffett. He also has four stepdaughters from his marriage to Morse.
