Modi Govt Launches New Aadhaar App with Face ID & QR Code Verification: “As Easy As UPI”

Union minister Ashwini Vaishnaw unveils Aadhaar’s new digital app with real-time face ID and QR-based authentication, promising a secure, paperless future for identity verification.

April 9, 2025: The Aadhaar system just went fully digital.

In a major push towards secure and paperless identity verification, the Modi government has launched a brand-new Aadhaar app featuring real-time face ID and QR code-based authentication, Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced on Tuesday.

Describing it as a “game-changer”, Vaishnaw said, “Aadhaar verification now becomes as simple as a UPI payment,” in a post on social media platform X.

Built in collaboration with the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), the app is designed to eliminate the need for physical Aadhaar cards or photocopies at hotels, shops, airports, and other points of identity validation.

How does it work?

Users can scan a QR code at any “point of authentication” — similar to how you scan a QR to pay with UPI — and get verified instantly with face recognition. All data is shared securely and only with user consent, directly from their device, not via photocopies or cloud servers.

Key features include:

  • Face ID-based real-time verification
  • QR-code scanning for instant authentication
  • Complete user control over shared data
  • No physical Aadhaar or photocopy needed
  • AI integration for added security and accuracy

Goodbye photocopies, hello secure IDs

The minister emphasized the app’s focus on privacy and convenience, calling it “100% digital and secure.”

“No need to hand over Aadhaar photocopy at hotel receptions, shops, or during travel. Verification is entirely in your control,” said Vaishnaw.

The Aadhaar app is currently in beta testing but is expected to roll out nationwide very soon. Once deployed, it will redefine how Indians verify their identity, setting a new standard for digital public infrastructure.
