Nandan Nilekani Predicts ‘Energy UPI’ as India’s Next Big Tech Revolution

Infosys co-founder and Aadhaar architect Nandan Nilekani envisions every Indian home becoming an energy producer, seller, and buyer—mirroring the digital payment revolution brought by UPI.

New Delhi, March 30, 2025 – Infosys co-founder and Aadhaar visionary Nandan Nilekani has predicted that India’s next ‘UPI-style’ disruption will take place in the energy sector. Speaking at a gathering of entrepreneurs, Nilekani said that just like the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) revolutionized digital transactions, solar energy and decentralised power generation will redefine how Indians produce, store, and consume energy.

“Every home will become an energy producer with rooftop solar. Every home will be an energy store with an EV battery. And every home will be able to buy and sell energy,” Nilekani said, likening it to how UPI enables seamless money transfers today.

He described the upcoming change as a move from centralized electricity grids to individual micro-energy systems, where citizens will function as mini energy entrepreneurs. This transition, he believes, will unleash a wave of economic empowerment and innovation, especially in rural and semi-urban India.

Nilekani drew parallels to how UPI simplified payments and allowed millions to transact digitally, saying energy digitisation could offer a similar grassroots impact.

🔢 UPI’s Incredible Journey:

Launched in 2016, UPI has become the backbone of India’s digital economy, accounting for 80% of all retail digital payments. In January 2025, UPI recorded 16.99 billion transactions, valued at over ₹23.48 lakh crore — its highest ever in a single month.

UPI’s reach has gone global too, with acceptance in countries such as the UAE, Singapore, France, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, and Mauritius, allowing Indian users to make international payments using Indian apps.

As per Nilekani, the next wave of transformation won’t just be financial—it will be electrical, clean, and community-driven, powered by the sun and smart tech.
